Makeup setting spray is without a doubt a game-changer in any beauty routine. While foundation, blush and eyeshadow create the look, setting spray is the unsung hero that ensures it lasts all day (or night) long. No slipping. No sliding. Just perfection for hours on end.
Beyond extended wear, there's a plethora of benefits to be exploited with this product. Here, I take a look at Superdrug brand Studio London’s new concept sprays and explore why setting products deserve a permanent spot on your dressing table.
Before I delve into how I got on with Superdrug’s vegan offerings, these are just some of the reasons why I set my makeup every day.
Setting spray no-brainers
Endurance champion: Undoubtedly, the most celebrated benefit of setting spray is its ability to extend the life of applied makeup. Whether you're battling summer heat or a long day at work, setting spray acts as a protective shield, preventing makeup from fading, smudging or melting. This is particularly helpful for those with oily skin, as the spray helps control shine and keeps foundation from settling into fine lines.
Flawless finish every time: Setting spray isn't a one-size-fits-all product. Many formulas offer specific finishes, allowing you to customise your look. For a dewy, radiant finish, opt for a hydrating setting spray. These sprays often contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, leaving your skin with a healthy glow without sacrificing makeup wear time. On the other hand, mattifying setting sprays are perfect for oily or combination skin. They absorb excess oil, ensuring your makeup stays shine-free throughout the day. You can also apply a setting spray before you apply base products to provide a barrier between the skin and cosmetics.
Skincare hero: The benefits of using a setting spray can extend beyond just makeup. Some formulas contain ingredients that provide additional skincare benefits. Sprays with SPF offer sun protection, while others might be infused with vitamins and antioxidants to nourish the skin.
A multitasking marvel: Setting spray's versatility doesn't stop there. Some formulas can be used as primers before applying makeup, as stated above. These sprays create a smooth, even canvas, allowing your makeup to glide on flawlessly and last even longer. Setting spray can also be used to intensify the color of your eyeshadow pigments. Simply spritz a bit onto your makeup brush before applying your favorite eyeshadow for a more vibrant look.
Confidence in a bottle: Perhaps the most underrated benefit of setting spray is the confidence boost it provides. Knowing your makeup will stay put throughout the day allows you to focus on what truly matters. You won’t have to worry about touch-ups and can conquer your day with unwavering confidence.
New Studio London setting sprays
If you are looking for an affordable, vegan setting spray that is tailored to your desired makeup finish, the new Studio London setting mists are worth checking out. Available in dewy and matte finishes, they include U-Dew-U and U-Matte-R formulas as well as a Feeling Peachy version.
Sold in 100ml bullet spray bottles, the mists deliver a fine layer of fixing that dries quickly. I bought both the dewy and matte finishes at £5 each (Superdrug member offer). If you aren’t signed up to Superdrug’s loyalty scheme, the products will set you back £6 each.
I chose these, initially, because of the design of the bottle. It’s attractive. The sleek and unique packaging is combined with a great spray delivery device. The products are easy to use, deliver on the brand’s promises and have no unpleasant smells. They also seem to last a while.
I use the fixers to eliminate a powdery finish. My normal routine is to use a spay after applying my base products and again after I’ve used powder. For extra long-lasting looks, I repeat the final spray. In between uses, I achieve quick drying times by using a fan.
It’s worth noting that U-Dew-U contains some great skincare properties, including niacinamide. The U-Matte-R spray can keep your makeup in place for 16 hours.
Based on value, performance and accessibility (online and on the high street), I think these products are a great addition to the Studio London range.
Next time you reach for your makeup bag, remember the power of setting spray. It's more than just a finishing touch; it's an investment in a look that lasts and a confidence that shines through.
