skincare hacks for the over-40s

If your skincare routine leaves you feeling deflated every time you look in a mirror, relax... There are simple and inexpensive things you can do to turn things around. Our game-changing skincare hacks, hand-piked to transform mature skin, will hydrate, plump and brighten even the dulluest of skin.

Whether you are concerned about the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots or just want to look more radiant, this guide will have an effortless solution.

As well as tackling obvious signs of ageing, our skincare hacks promise to boost your confidence. So, if your self-esteem could do with a lift right now, keep reading.

Want to smooth out fine lines? Tick. Need to get your glow on for summer? Tick. Desperate to even out patchy toned skin? Tick.

We practise what we preach and use all of the hacks listed below ourselves, so we know they work.

It doesn’t matter if you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s or above, our skincare tips will deliver long-lasting benefits.

Polish your skin

Exfoliation is one thing, polishing is another.

In fact, polishing is one of the quickest ways to remove dead skin and debris to reveal a naturally glowing complexion.

Unlike traditional face scrubs, this is one of those skincare hacks that really refines the surface of the skin with minute particles. They re-texturise the face gently but quickly.

Recommended products include Sanctuary Spa’s 1 Minute Warming Microdermabrasion Polish and L'Oreal Paris Smooth Sugars Glowing Sugar Scrub.

If you aren’t keen on using skincare products with ‘bits’ in, there is an alternative. Some cleansing cloths are now two-ply. One side is designed to remove make-up and grime while the other is manufactured to polish the skin. We recommend Emma Hardie’s Dual Action Microfibre and Muslin Cleansing Cloth. As well as polishing the skin, this product can also brighten and tone.

Polish your skin once a week.

Use a skin peel

While a skin peel may sound extreme, it’s actually not. Modern treatments are gentle, melting away dead cells and dirt to leave the skin feeling completely fresh and renewed. You won’t spot a flake of peeled skin anywhere!

AHA solutions can perform a facial in 10 minutes or less. As well as giving your skin a smoother texture, this type of product minimises the look of pores and leaves skin looking radiant.

We recommend The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution for hassle-free results.

Alternatively, why not try Revolution Skincare’s Pineapple Enzyme Glow Gommage Peel? It uses fruit acids to deliver the same result.

Use a skin peel once a month.

Invest in a facial oil

A good facial oil will hit you up with an instant glow, but that is not its main benefit.

As well as delivering deep-down hydration, an oil will help the skin retain moisture and improve its elasticity. Couple those no-brainers with plumping and clarifying benefits and you will recognise the value of adding a facial oil to your evening routine.

Perfect for dry to very dry skin, this is a treatment that targets most of the tell-tale signs of ageing.

Use daily after cleansing and before applying a night cream. Warm the product in your hands before gently pressing the oil into the skin with fingertips.

Switch to a cleansing balm

If you wear make-up, swap your face wash or micellar water for a cleansing balm. Safe to use even around the eyes, this is a product that doesn’t just thoroughly cleanse the skin - it hydrates it while delivering an utterly luxurious experience. While you may still need to use a gentle eye make-up remover, your face won’t be left feeling parched or oily. It will be super soft and toner-ready.

We recommend Emma Hardie’s Moringa Cleansing Balm. A cheaper alternative is W7’s Peachy Clean balm.

Introduce retinol to your bedtime routine

Retinol, or Vitamin A, is a powerful anti-ageing ingredient because it works below the surface of the skin. It neutralises damaging free radicals, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. It achieves this by boosting the production of collagen. It also aids the elasticity of the skin and produces a plumping effect.

All over-40s should be using retinol in their routine.

For the benefits of retinol plus a morning glow, we recommend Revolution Skincare’s Retinol Overnight Cream. It’s light, lasts ages and works better than many products that cost three times as much.

If you don’t want to change your current night cream, consider using a retinol serum.

Top skincare hacks for over-40s

We are in the over-40s age range ourselves, so we know what it is like to grapple with skin concerns caused by ageing.

Ultimately, none of us can completely turn back the clock (sadly) - but there are things we can do to effectively minimise the ravages of time.

Want more ideas? Try a glycolic acid toner for a smooth-as-glass skin texture or a pink clay mask to brighten your complexion.

To prevent skin damage, always wear a Factor 50 sunscreen - even in the winter.

WARNING: Always do a patch test before applying a new product to your face and wait for 24 hours. Remember that 'natural' doesn't mean it won't cause a problem. Many natural ingredients are irritants.
