Skincare for young skin: a guide to healthy, radiant skin

Updated: Sep 15

Young skin is typically resilient and naturally glowing, but it's still susceptible to certain skin concerns. With skincare resonating with children as young as seven, it’s important to understand what products can be useful to support skin health going forward. Establishing a good skincare routine early can help maintain healthy skin and prevent future problems.

Here's a simple guide to skincare for teens and under 10s.

Understanding young skin

If you are under 10 and want to start a skincare routine, stick to a simple two-step regimen morning and night.

Your biggest enemy is ultraviolet light. To counteract its effects, a morning routine should comprise a gentle cleanse followed by sunscreen. An evening routine should include a gentle cleanse and a vitamin E moisturiser. Avoid moisturising products that contain active ingredients intended for mature skin, including retinol and peptides. If you have sensitive skin, swap your moisturising product for a simple oat-based cream or lotion.

Never use targeted treatments or electronic exfoliation tools. You may not see it right now, but your skin is probably the best it is ever going to be. What you should be aiming for is a maintenance programme that will keep it healthy and glowing into adulthood.

For teens, the first step to effective skincare is understanding your skin type. This can help you choose the right products to tackle concerns while avoiding irritants.

What’s your skin type?

  • Oily - produces excess sebum, leading to shine and breakouts.

  • Dry - lacks moisture, resulting in flakiness and tightness.

  • Combination - oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) but dry in other areas.

  • Sensitive - prone to redness, irritation and allergic reactions.

Once you have decided which of the above applies to your skin, you can start to formulate the right skincare routine for you.

Essential skincare steps

A basic skincare routine consists of three fundamental steps: cleansing, moisturising and sun protection.

What do each of these steps involve and what are their benefits?

Cleansing

The aim with any cleansing ritual is to gently remove dirt, oil and makeup from your skin. Use a mild cleanser that suits your skin type. Avoid harsh soaps that can strip your skin of natural oils.

Moisturising

Your skin needs hydration to maintain its elasticity and prevent dryness. Choose a moisturiser that complements your skin type.

Sun protection

Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days. Sun damage can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer in later life.

Pro tips for young skin

Exfoliation is important for teen skin. Gently exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to remove dead cells and promote cell turnover. Use a physical exfoliant suitable for your skin type. I do not recommend chemical peels for young skin.

Diet and hydration play a crucial role in skin health. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can nourish your skin from the inside out. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. If you can’t stand water, make it more palatable with squash.

Another overlooked essential for good skin health is sleep: Aim to get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Why is sleep essential? It encourages skin repair and rejuvenation.

Stress management is important too. Excessive stress can contribute to skin problems. Practice relaxation techniques like simple deep breathing to manage stress and keep your emotions on an even keel.

I know it’s hard, but… Avoid touching your face! Constantly touching your face can transfer bacteria and oils to your skin, leading to breakouts. Never pick spots and wash your hands regularly.

Always consult a dermatologist or visit your GP if you experience persistent skin issues. Professional advice and treatment will stop a problem from becoming entrenched.

Common skin concerns for young adults

Acne is very common and typically affects those aged 12 and over. It is caused by hormonal changes, stress and, sadly, genetics. They can all contribute to acne and determine its severity. Treat acne with over-the-counter or prescription medications as recommended by a dermatologist.

Being a teenager is the gift that keeps on giving! Another skin concern that often rears its ugly head during this time of life is enlarged pores. Enlarged pores can be caused by excess oil production and dirt buildup. Regular cleansing and exfoliation can help minimise their appearance.

Dark spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, are most often caused by acne scars in young skin. Sun damage is also a concern, especially as its effects are cumulative over your lifetime. Consult a dermatologist for treatment options and avoid over-the-counter treatments.

Remember, consistency is key when it comes to skincare. Stick to your routine and be patient. With proper care, you can maintain healthy, radiant skin throughout your youth and the rest of your life.
