Mean Girls x Revolution Burn Book eyeshadow palette review

Let’s cut to the chase: I haven’t been excited about a Revolution launch for a very long time. We’re talking about almost a year. Enter… Mean Girls x Revolution, a brand new collection that combines wicked packaging with high-quality formulas. Judging by the almost immediate ‘Limited Supply’, I guess I’m not the only one blown away by what this end-of-summer newness has to offer.

The Burn Book and lip gloss from the Mean Girls x Revolution collection

Revolution is synonymous with brand collabs, and most of them have not interested me in the slightest. Power Puff Girls, Amanda Holden and Dr. Seuss are among those that spring to mind. Yawn. This is different. With the Mean Girls 20th anniversary collab, they’ve managed to tap into what beauty lovers are currently searching for and delivered it - along with plenty more - in one crush-worthy drop.

Affordable eye candy is what I thought when I first saw it. The appeal was instant. It literally turned my head. I like the design of the Burn Book and the colour story. As well as offering usable shades, this palette includes exceptional shimmers. We wanted bright and we’ve got it with the Burn Book.

Most people have heard of Mean Girls, but just in case you haven’t… It is a popular performing arts and broadcasting franchise that revolves around the social dynamics of high school life.

The series, which includes a film and a musical, explores themes of cliques, friendships, bullying, and self-discovery. The central character, Cady Heron, is a homeschooled student who enters a public high school and quickly becomes entangled in the drama of the ‘popular girls’, known as The Plastics. Through her experiences, Cady navigates the complexities of social hierarchies, confronts her own insecurities and learns the importance of authenticity and kindness.

So, not a bad theme at all for makeup that will definitely appeal to younger Revolution Beauty fans. Due to the unique packaging and, actually, great formulas, I think this range will have even wider appeal. Hey, it appealed to me and I’m definitely not a teenager! I also think the detail of the collection perfectly reflects the theme - no mean feat.

The idea for the Burn Book was inspired by the must-have accessory for characters in Mean Girls. This palette comprises 15 well-pigmented eyeshadows in a 3D padded case. It reminds me of a journal or scrapbook with totally cool artwork. Inside there’s a good-sized mirror, presented ‘on theme’ in a Polaroid frame with ‘So you agree, you think you’re really pretty’ scrawled in a handwriting font across the bottom.

Inside and out, the palette has plenty of hearts and lipstick kisses, which fit the theme but would be more suited to a lip offering. I’d like to have seen a batting eyelid in there somewhere. Having said that, I love it. It’s display worthy - and that’s a ‘thing’ right now. Makeup collections have become home decor - something Revolution may or may not have spotted when looking around at the competition. This is giving me PLouise vibes, but in a harder, slightly more grown up format.

Inside Revolution's Mean Girls Burn Book

The Burn Book measures: 20cm in height, 12cm in width and 3cm in depth. A5-ish will give you a good idea

It's smaller than it looks online, but this is likely to add to its appeal with the current trend moving away from extra large eyeshadow palettes.

It is priced at £19.99 and the collection is a Limited Edition.

The palette includes eight matte shades and seven shimmers. I can spot at least three good transition shades in there, along with at least four truly light shimmers. One, 'Really Pretty', is exceptionally light. Four of the mattes come in deep shades - perfect for blow-outs and using as an alternative to a liner.

My favourite shades are: Really Pretty, of course, along with Cool Mom, The Plastics, Cheese Fries and Get In Loser.

I haven’t listed the pink matte, We Wear Pink, but it’s definitely one that I will experiment with. Pink is anti-ageing on the eyes and will suit just about everyone.

This is one of those rare palettes that includes lots of shades I know I’m going to reach for over and over again. The shimmers are exactly what beauty lovers have been asking for. While the Icon collection, released earlier this year, went some way towards meeting those needs, it didn’t quite deliver. The shimmers in one or two of the product variations weren’t as bright as the ones we have got here and the packaging was just too plain. Remember, it’s all about eye candy right now. The transparent lids just didn’t scream ‘Put me on display’. I don’t recall seeing a single image of these palettes being shared as part of a makeup decor theme.

It’s going to be so different with the Mean Girls collection.

Mean Girls x Revolution lip gloss

I didn’t stop at the palette. I was also drawn to the new bling keychain lip gloss. Who can resist a lip product that you can attach to your handbag? I think Revolution has missed a trick here. These glosses, which boast a diamante ‘R’ (for Revolution, obviously), are only available in Clear, Cherry and Peach. They are collectable and oh-so display-worthy, so why not more? People would have bought every shade and shown them off. Happy customers would have plastered their gloss hauls all over TikTok.

The glosses are scented and smell divine. The formula is rich and creamy, and it feels plumping too. Each is named after a Mean Girls character - Regina George, clear shimmer; Gretchen Wieners, peach; Karen Smith, cherry. I went for the peach and I’m definitely not disappointed. The best bit? They are only £6.99 each!

I like the fact that the bling is attached to the lid - making it so much easier NOT to lose!

This collection also includes liquid and cream blushes, fixing spray, a brush set, headband and more. A mini collection called The Plastics is retailing at just £14.99.

With my collector’s hat on, I’d say Mean Girls x Revolution is a no-brainer. It’s different, it’s cool and it’s what every bedroom shelf needs (if you love makeup). As a consumer, I’d say this collection is a great alternative to more expensive brands. It delivers on value, presentation and quality.

Of course, as I’ve already said, I’m not the only person crushing on this range right now. So, if you want to get your Mean Girls Burn Book or bling lip glosses before the limited edition sells out, you’d better act fast!
