A turkey neck, double chin and sagging jawline – horrors we do not want to see glaring back at us when we look in the mirror! The unpalatable truth is that, while most of us make an effort with the face, the throat and decolletage are often neglected until signs of ageing have already kicked in.
Blubber under the jaw and thin, crepe-like skin above the breasts can provoke a sudden interest in the trusty scarf. (I’ve got about fifty!) Covering the neck and avoiding low-cut tops are common traits in maturing women. Summer, once the season to show off almost everything we’ve got, becomes so boring. Feeling you have to ‘cover up’ to stop people from seeing you are ‘getting old’ is no fun when its thirty degrees outside!
Losing the definition of your jawline and seeing muscles slacken, not to mention fat deposits build up on your neck, can really knock your confidence. (I’ve been there!) It is depressing, especially if you have invested time and money looking after your face.
While some of these common signs of ageing are hereditary, or brought on by lifestyle choices, they can be tackled. Watching what you eat, increasing your water intake, exercise and modern skin treatments can have a dramatic effect.
So, summer fashion doesn’t have to be a no-go zone.
If you are tired of drooping jowls or sun-damaged skin above the chest, I’ve got some great ideas to shift the ageing gear into reverse.
Products To Lift And Firm The Throat
Tackling dark spots, uneven skin tone and crepiness should be your goal for the decolletage area. Skin treatments that contain retinol and hyaluronic acid and boost the production of collagen are recommended, along with a high SPF sunscreen. This delicate part of the body should be kept moisturised and protected from ultraviolet rays.
Boost hydration by replacing drinks high in caffeine with plain water or weak squash. Water flushes the body of toxins, making the skin appear clearer, plumper and brighter.
With the jawline, you should be aiming to give it definition. As well as using a good lifting and firming treatment, Regime Skin Care recommends some simple exercises. They have kept this routine very short to encourage you to keep it up (I am doing these exercises myself – perhaps we could share notes):
- Use your fingers to move your cheeks back. Pull slightly downwards. You want to feel feel the action tightening the area around the mouth. While holding this position, gently massage the jawline. Begin in the middle of your chin, working outwards and upward. This exercise should be repeated morning and night.
- Again, use the fingers and pull down the corners of your mouth. At the same time, draw your lips together to form a tight pouting pose. Hold it there! Keep the pout going for 10 seconds. Repeat three times. Recommended for morning and night.
- Get yourself in the sitting position and ensure your back is straight. This exercise will stretch and tighten your neck and jaw muscles. Start by pointing your chin up and then out. Hold it there. Now extend the lower lip over your upper lip. Again, hold the position. Try to keep it going for 10 seconds. Repeat five times. We recommend you do this exercise morning and night.
If you are planning to lose weight, make sure you take a sensible approach. Losing too much too quickly can seriously age the skin – especially the face and neck.
