Aloe vera gel is one of the most versatile skin care products on the planet. It has a multitude of uses and benefits, and is relatively cheap.
Derived from a succulent, evergreen plant typically grown in tropical or semi-tropical dry climates, it is best cold pressed and unrefined. While many brands will use the phrase ‘pure aloe vera’, all gels contain a preservative. Therefore, the purest forms will usually boast around 96 to 99 per cent ‘pure’ plant extract. Leading brands use only natural preservatives to ensure the product is completely organic.
Aloe Vera Gel is soothing and calming, so it is a staple in the aftersun market and is also widely used as a moisturiser. However, its uses don’t end there. It can also be applied as a serum to target fine lines and wrinkles on the face and, increasingly, is worn as a primer under makeup.
Used as a hair mask, it can detangle, add shine and de-frizz. Those who suffer from seasonal rashes swear by it and some, including me, use it to keep the skin moisturised during cancer treatments. Easily absorbed, this plant-based product is both soothing and hydrating. It is also cooling.
The main benefits of aloe vera in gel form:
- Easy to apply
- Inexpensive high-quality skin care
- Calms irritated skin
- Can treat minor burns (although evidence to support this via research is currently ongoing)
- Moisturises dry skin
- Seriously hydrates parched or mature skin
- Defrizzes unruly hair
- Used as a shower gel, it leaves the body feeling silky smooth and refreshed
Eclat Aloe Vera Gel
I have been using this gel for the past three-and-a-half weeks. I chose to test it because the manufacturer says it is ethically sourced and more than 99.5 per cent pure. This product has an excellent shelf life of 24 months and benefits from all-natural preservatives.
Eclat Aloe Vera Gel is unfiltered and, during harvesting, leaves are hand-filleted in Australia. Not only that, harvesting is carried out at dawn to ensure optimal quality.
As well as using the gel to prevent radiotherapy burns, I have also used it to wash my hair in the shower – so that anything running down over my mastectomy scar has no harsh chemicals. I am pleased with the results so far. It is slightly sticky when first applied directly to the skin, so I always ensure I am wearing loose-fitting clothes. It takes around ten minutes to be fully absorbed. I do use a lot of product.
This gel has a ‘clean’, fresh smell. I intend to use it as a makeup primer and will definitely give it a go as a serum around the eye area in the future. I feel safe using this product – so much so that I have ordered some more.
Badger Aloe Vera Gel
This is an unscented, fair trade brand and commonly used as an aftersun. The consistency is slightly runnier than that of the Eclat gel. However, this makes for super-easy application – especially if you don’t want to apply too much pressure to a sore or irritated area of skin.
Suitable for use on skin of all ages, the Badger brand product cools and soothes. Cruelty-free, it is certified organic. I have used this product as a shower gel and on my hair. It performs well and a single tube lasted more than a week of constant use
Versatile Skin Care
If you want to invest in a truly versatile skin care product that can be used for a multitude of things, aloe vera gel is a really good buy.

Today’s note to readers: I am feeling a little deflated today. After sailing through the first 12 radiotherapy sessions, there was a hiccup yesterday which means my treatment will not now finish on Monday (good job we are in lockdown and I haven’t organised a party!). The hospital lost its internet connection. I was already in my gown and next to go in when it happened. After four hours of sitting around waiting for the fault to be fixed, I was sent home. That means, an extra day will have to be bolted onto my treatment timetable.
